Poker is a card game where players compete to form the highest ranking hand based on the rules of the game. The highest ranked hand wins the “pot” at the end of each betting round. The pot is the total amount of chips bet in a hand.

At the start of a hand, each player places an ante into the pot. Then a single card is dealt face up to each player. Betting in rounds occurs and the highest hand at the end of a full hand of five cards wins the pot. The highest hand is determined by the combination of pairs, three of a kind and high cards (five aces beats five kings). The joker (“bug”) is an additional card that can be used as a wild card in some hands.

If you have a good hand at the beginning of a hand, raise your bets to force weaker hands out of the pot. Also, don’t be afraid to bluff! A well executed bluff can make even a bad hand worth playing.

Before starting a hand, you should shuffle the cards and cut them once. Then you should pass the dealer position clockwise to the player to your left. This person is the first to deal and then bet in that hand. You can cut the cards more than once if you want to, but each time you do it, your opponent has the right of first refusal to cut.
