The earliest evidence of gambling comes from ancient China, where tiles dating back to 2,300 B.C. were used to play a rudimentary game of chance.

The main reason people gamble is to try and win something of value. Some forms of gambling require a significant amount of skill, while other forms of gambling require minimal skill. Some large scale gambling activities require professional organization.

There are many organizations that support people with gambling problems. Some offer counselling. Some offer support for the families of those affected.

Most states prohibit gambling on the internet. However, some websites are operated by private individuals or groups. These illegal sites often offer card games such as poker and craps.

The federal government has passed legislation that prevents unauthorized transportation of lottery tickets across state lines. While there are no official estimates of the size of the illegal gambling market, there are estimates that it may exceed $10 trillion.
