It has been portrayed on television and is played in casinos, private homes, and poker clubs. It has become an American pastime and a major source of revenue for some individuals. In addition, some people play it for recreational purposes, while others consider it a serious competitive endeavor. The social stigma associated with the game has made some colleges reluctant to admit students who have a strong interest in it, fearing they may become addicted to gambling or have unrealistic ideas about how much money they can win.
