Problem Gambling

Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

Gambling is an activity involving the wagering of something of value on an event whose outcome is determined by chance. It is a common activity that can be enjoyed in moderation, but can cause problems for some people. Problem gambling affects the gambler, their relationships and family, work performance and can lead to debt and even homelessness. It can also affect the community and society as a whole.

There is no one type of gambling that is more addictive than the others. However, some forms of gambling have been linked with higher levels of risk of developing harmful gambling behaviour. These include: the lottery, casino games (e.g., slots), sports betting and online poker. It is thought that these types of activities may increase impulsivity and other factors like sensation- and novelty-seeking, as well as arousal and negative emotions that are associated with a lack of impulse control.

In addition, there are some people who can become addicted to gambling when their mood is low. This may be due to depression, stress or substance abuse. It is important to see a doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms because they can help you find the right treatment for you.

Many people who have trouble with gambling often feel secretive about it. They may hide their money or lie about how much they are spending to try and conceal the problem. They may also try to win back lost money by increasing their bets.
