Problem Gambling

Problem gambling has negative psychological, physical, and social repercussions. It is classified as an impulse control disorder. The activity causes severe psychological problems, and can also be detrimental to one’s physical health. Individuals who are addicted to gambling may experience migraines, intestinal disorders, and distress. A person suffering from gambling addiction may also feel hopeless and despondent. It is not uncommon for this person to attempt suicide. This can make the condition worse.

People who are addicted to gambling often spend a great deal of time thinking about the next venture and how to get money for it. They often gamble during times of distress or to make up for losses. They may even lie about their involvement with gambling to avoid getting caught. They lose significant relationships, educational opportunities, and even their financial well-being. Further, many gamblers are unable to pay their bills. Furthermore, many suffer from a plethora of physical and emotional symptoms.

Commercial gambling involves betting money or other value on an uncertain event. The gambler’s motivations, the prize, and the risk factor, all influence the outcome. A person may be tempted to spend too much money if they win, but this is not the purpose of gambling. Sometimes, people gamble too much or become addicted to it. While commercial gambling is legal, gaming is not. It involves companies offering these activities to the public. The latter are regulated by gaming control boards.
